In other news, I was juried into the SoHo Photo Gallery’s 27th National Competition (closed August 7th) I was the Juror’s Choice for the “Bodyscapes” exhibit at the PH21 Gallery in Budapest (closed 7/23) and I was selected into the Online Members show at The Griffin Museum of Photography: https://griffinmuseum.org/show/28mjs_online/ (Available for viewing through September 4.)

I spent June 15-August 1st in NYC teaching at The Summer Academy of The New York Times. This was my fifth season with the Summer Academy. The first 4 weeks I taught “Photojournalism as Art” with the great Ángel Franco (this was our third season together) and the last two weeks teaching a survey course called Fashion/Photography/Film with Michelle Alleyne, Rebecca Eskreis and Erin Baiano (a great dance photographer – she and I have taught together for 4 seasons.) Many of you have heard me say that there is nothing better than working with enthusiastic, hardworking, and inquisitive teenagers and that is still true.

Katherine just had a great article (Corn Chowder With BLT Salsa Is a Marriage made in August) in the Provincetown Independent (photos by me…) A great recipe. https://provincetownindependent.org/visual/2022/08/10/corn-chowder-with-blt-salsa-is-a-marriage-made-in-august/

As to the world? What to say. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine continues. The Ukrainians are fighting valiantly against a country that seems to think war crimes are a good strategy.

NB: Check out the band DakhaBrakha, a brilliant group from Ukraine. We just saw them at The Payomet Performing Arts Center in Truro. Amazing musicians and vocalists.

The FBI served a search warrant on an ex-President (Remember when we though Nixon or Bush Jr. was as low as we could go?)

 Monkey Pox…

But gas prices are down, employment is up, Veterans, finally, got some much needed health care and more.

I continue my radio shows at WOMR.org – Show every Saturday at midnight (Nighthawk Radio) and this Wednesday (Aug 17th) Blackfish Creak at 9:30 am (show is alternate Wednesdays) Tune In! All shows are archived for two weeks at https://womr.org/schedule/broadcast-archive/

Postcards are available for sale on this website and at The Customs House Fine Papers and Fancy Goods; 5 Commercial Street, Wellfleet MA 02667 508-214-0378

* Why are they the Dog Days of Summer called that?
From “The Farmer’s Almanac”
“This period of sweltering weather coincides with the year’s heliacal (meaning “at sunrise”) rising of Sirius, the Dog Star. Sirius is part of the constellation Canis Majoris—the “Greater Dog”—which is where Sirius gets its canine nickname, as well as its official name, Alpha Canis Majoris. Not including our own Sun, Sirius is the brightest star in the sky.

In ancient Greece, Egypt, and Rome, it was believed that the dawn rising of Sirius in mid- to late summer contributed to the extreme weather of the season. In other words, the “combined heat” of super-bright Sirius and our Sun was thought to be the cause of summer’s sweltering temperatures. The name “Sirius” even stems from Ancient Greek seírios, meaning “scorching.”

Have a great rest of the summer!
